ABOUT

I am constantly exploring the relationship between printmaking and fiber as a means to explain my interest in these media.  My fascination has something to do with chemistry and process, but more to do with sensation.  The texture of a gnarly, mossy yarn compared to that of a sheet of BFK Rives paper.  The smell of intaglio ink compared to a boiling dye bath.  The feel of thick wool flossa around my fingers as I knot it.  The contrast between the mechanical aspects of these processes and my intuitive nature involves me completely.  In print, I prefer to make expressive monotypes with string and torn paper to manipulate the ink into a quick drawing.  In tapestry, I take my inspiration from nature for printed imagery and yarn choices.  I am fond of organic shapes and yarns that remind me of moss, grass and sunsets.  While weaving, I find nothing more exciting than choosing my next yarn, a spontaneous decision based almost solely on which thread feels like the right choice.  My current work explores printing onto different planar materials (such as strips of felt or basket reed) to create a woven print.  These pieces challenge the viewer to interact with a textile in a way they generally would not - you’re meant to touch them (politely).

In working with such a variety of materials I’ve realized that each has it’s own character.  Instead of fighting with my work, my ideas often have to evolve to let the piece grow into what it’s supposed to be.  The pieces where I accomplish this are always the most successful and satisfying.

The majority of art you’ll find on this website is for sale.  Also, most woven pieces can be recreated with different color schemes.  I am currently available for commission.  Please direct any inquiries to my e-mail.
